An accident occurred at an intersection when a student on an electric bike abruptly turned into the opposing lane on a red light, cutting off a woman driving a motorbike straight ahead. The woman braked suddenly to avoid the collision, causing her wheels to slip and sending her falling onto the road. The student on the electric bike then collided with the fallen woman, leaving her motionless. The extent of injuries is currently unknown.
Traffic law mandates that vehicles approaching an intersection with a red traffic light must reduce speed and stop before the stop line. Drivers are prohibited from entering the opposing lane to make a shortcut turn, as this creates hazards for vehicles proceeding lawfully.
According to Decree 168/2024, motorcyclists who run a red light and cause an accident face fines ranging from 10 to 14 million VND, a deduction of 10 points from their driver's license, and potential criminal prosecution depending on the severity of the consequences.
Motorcyclists should also be aware that during emergency braking, using only the front or rear brake can easily cause the driver to fall due to loss of control or skidding. The proper braking technique for scooters involves first fully releasing the throttle to allow the engine to slow the vehicle, then applying both brakes simultaneously. This method significantly reduces the likelihood of skidding.
