On 14/4, a motorbike carrying three individuals, none wearing helmets, was observed swerving dangerously on a car-only lane of Nhat Tan Bridge. The motorbike repeatedly weaved through traffic, overtaking numerous cars. Following one such reckless maneuver, the vehicle skidded, throwing all three riders onto the road just as an oncoming car approached. The motorbike itself slid further away. Fortunately, the car narrowly avoided running over the individuals.
This incident highlights severe violations of traffic regulations. Vehicle operators are required to remain in their designated lanes and avoid speeding, reckless overtaking, or dangerous swerving, which pose significant risks to both themselves and other road users. Specifically, motorbikes are prohibited from entering lanes designated for high-speed cars. Furthermore, it is mandatory for motorbike riders and passengers to wear helmets, and carrying more than one passenger is illegal.
According to Decree 168/2024, motorbike riders caught swerving or weaving face fines ranging from 8 million to 10 million dong. If such actions lead to an accident, the fine increases to 10 million to 14 million dong, accompanied by a driving license revocation for 10-12 months, and potential criminal charges. Violators may also have their vehicles confiscated.
Additional penalties apply to other infractions observed in the incident. Riding a motorbike with three people incurs a fine of 600,000 to 800,000 dong. If carrying three people results in a traffic accident, the fine escalates to 10 million to 14 million dong, along with a deduction of 10 points from the driving license. Motorbike riders not wearing helmets are fined 400,000 to 600,000 dong per violation, a penalty that applies to both the driver and any passengers. Moreover, illegally entering a car-only lane on a motorbike carries a fine of 600,000 to 800,000 dong.
