Toyota Vios to launch hybrid version

The Japanese automaker will unveil a hybrid version of its B-segment sedan on 21/8, possibly using the Yaris Cross's hybrid system.

According to Headlightmag, the Toyota Vios hybrid (known as the Yaris Ativ HEV in Thailand) will be available in two variants: the HEV Premium and HEV GR Sport.

The Yaris Ativ HEV's debut in Thailand comes three years after the gasoline-powered version's release in August 2022. Details about the hybrid powertrain are scarce, though Thai media speculate it will mirror the Yaris Cross hybrid, launched there in October 2023.

The Yaris Cross hybrid features a 1.5-liter, naturally aspirated, four-cylinder 2NR-VEX gasoline engine, compatible with E20 fuel, producing 90 horsepower and 121 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a 79-horsepower electric motor generating 141 Nm of torque, resulting in a combined system output of 110 horsepower. It uses an e-CVT automatic transmission and boasts an average fuel consumption of 3.8 liters/100 km, supporting E20 fuel. The top speed is 160 km/h.

The Toyota Yaris Ativ HEV is expected to offer features such as an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, smart key, automatic climate control with rear vents, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and 64-color ambient lighting.

Safety features for the B-segment sedan reportedly include vehicle stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and automatic high beams. The Toyota Safety Sense suite encompasses pre-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane departure alert and steering assist, and a distraction mitigation system. Additionally, it features adaptive cruise control (all speeds with Stop&Go functionality) and a 360-degree camera.

In Thailand, the Yaris Cross retails for 789,000-899,000 baht (24,300-27,700 USD). Meanwhile, the Yaris Ativ, with five variants including the latest Nightshade edition launched in October 2024, is priced at 549,000-699,000 baht (16,900-21,500 USD). The Yaris Ativ HEV is expected to start above 700,000 baht.

Currently, the Vios/Yaris Ativ HEV is only confirmed for Thailand, with no information on availability in other markets. Within the B-segment sedan category, the Vios competes with the Honda City and Mazda2, both of which already offer hybrid versions.

In Vietnam, all B-segment sedans still use gasoline engines. Hybrid engines have emerged in the B-segment, but in the crossover segment with models like the Toyota Yaris Cross and Honda HR-V.
