The accident involved a waste-hauling tanker truck and an eastbound train at a crossing on Yadkin Road in Chesapeake, Virginia, on the afternoon of 14/5. The powerful collision tore the tank from the truck's chassis, sending it flying and rupturing, spilling its liquid contents onto the road.
Preliminary investigation results indicate that the truck failed to stop at the stop sign before the collision. The driver sustained serious injuries but is currently in stable condition. No train crew members were injured.
This crossing lacks the typical barriers and signal lights that warn drivers of an approaching train. However, a stop sign is always present, requiring drivers to come to a complete stop, look in both directions, and ensure safety before proceeding.
