The new generation Lexus ES luxury sedan is set to redefine more than just design and powertrain options; it will also serve as the launchpad for Lexus's latest infotainment operating system. However, many of its notable features will only be accessible through recurring subscription fees.
Specifically, the Lexus ES 2026 will be the first model to feature the brand's newly developed, next-generation infotainment platform. This system is designed to be more smartphone-like, offering interface personalization, continuous over-the-air (OTA) software updates, and the potential for future feature expansion.

The cabin will feature a 14-inch floating central display paired with a 12,3-inch digital instrument cluster. Its new interface supports split-screen functionality, allows users to pin frequently used applications, and displays navigation directly behind the steering wheel. Lexus has also reinstated a physical home button, responding to user feedback regarding the inconvenience of entirely touch-based operations.
Lexus highlights its new voice control assistance system for its faster responses, improved contextual understanding, and ability to adjust various in-car functions such as climate control, navigation, and entertainment. Wireless apple carplay and android auto will also continue to be supported.
A significant aspect is how Lexus is implementing its connected features. Many utilities will not function post-purchase, instead requiring users to maintain a recurring subscription via the Lexus App. These features include: remote vehicle start, phone-based vehicle locking and unlocking, advanced intelligent assistant, cloud-connected navigation services, and other remote control functionalities. Lexus has not yet disclosed specific fees for each market.

This approach indicates Lexus's shift towards transforming cars into electronic devices with frequent updates, similar to current smartphones or smart TVs. This strategy allows the automaker to generate recurring revenue from software and digital services even after the initial vehicle sale.
The trend of subscription-based features is expanding across the automotive industry, particularly within the luxury segment. Before Lexus, BMW sparked debate by charging monthly fees for heated seats in some markets, while Mercedes offered performance boost packages for electric powertrains through software subscriptions.
Beyond the new infotainment system, the Lexus ES 2026 also signifies a major shift in its powertrain offerings. The car will be available in both hybrid and pure electric versions, including the front-wheel drive ES 350e and the all-wheel drive ES 500e with two electric motors. The sedan's design has also evolved to be more aerodynamic, featuring a closed front fascia, slim LED light strips, and a minimalist cabin. The interior reduces physical buttons, making way for screens and touch controls.
The new generation Lexus ES is scheduled for global release starting in 2026, where it will compete with other mid-size luxury sedans such as the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class, and Audi A6.
