The incident unfolded as a dashcam-equipped car traveled uphill on Ngoan Muc Pass (QL27). Upon reaching a blind curve, a truck from the opposite direction suddenly veered into the oncoming lane to overtake. The car driver had to brake sharply to avoid a head-on collision, then reversed a short distance to create enough space for the truck to complete its maneuver and return to its proper lane. While no accident occurred, the situation posed a significant safety risk, especially on a mountain pass characterized by numerous sharp bends and steep inclines.
Driving on mountain passes requires specific skills. Drivers must maintain low speeds, stay in their lane, and be prepared to brake, especially on blind curves. Overtaking is only permissible when the road is clear and there is no oncoming traffic. Furthermore, downhill vehicles should actively reduce speed and yield to uphill vehicles on narrow roads, avoiding overtakes on curves or hilltops. In an unexpected encounter with an encroaching oncoming vehicle, drivers should remain calm and prioritize safe braking.
According to Decree 168/2024 on road traffic violation penalties, illegal overtaking by an oto (car) incurs a fine of 4-6 million VND and results in two license points deducted.
