Video footage shows two Jaguar I-Pace EVs stationary and in contact in the airport parking lot. The front left side of one vehicle made contact with the front right door of the other.
In a statement to Teslarati, Waymo said the accident occurred at low speed, though it did not specify how low. Neither vehicle had a driver or passengers. The video shows both vehicles' information screens displaying the message: "Our team is aware of the interruption to your trip,".
This is not the first nor the most recent accident involving driverless taxis. Just one day after the two Waymo robotaxis collided, another Waymo vehicle was seen driving into a construction zone on the evening of 31/7.
These accidents have sparked debate. One topic of discussion is the difference between the technology used in Waymo's robotaxis and Tesla's, and which technology is safer.
Many argue that Waymo's multi-sensor approach (LiDAR, radar, and camera) is better, while Tesla fans contend that the camera and AI-based system is superior.
Ford CEO Jim Farley has previously stated his belief that Waymo's approach is better than Tesla's because "while a camera can be completely obscured, the LiDAR will see exactly what's ahead,".
Waymo is a direct competitor of Tesla Robotaxi. While Waymo conducted months of testing before launching its driverless taxi service in March, Tesla's robotaxi service only debuted in Austin, Texas, in June, so it is too early for a precise comparison.
