Two minimum distance signs often confuse drivers

Both signs indicate a minimum distance of 8 m, but supplementary signs specifying 800 m or 200 m carry distinct meanings regarding the effective range of the rule and the distance to its application point.

The question, "which sign indicates the actual distance from the sign's placement to where the minimum distance between two vehicles is required?", is one of the most frequently missed questions by readers preparing for their driving license exams.

For this question, 30% of readers answered incorrectly, choosing option one. Some readers stated they chose option one, reasoning that an arrow implied the sign would be encountered 800 m further down the road. However, this interpretation contradicts Quy chuan 41/2024, the National Technical Regulation on Road Signs and Signals.

According to regulations, a sign featuring an arrow signifies "scope of application", meaning drivers must maintain the specified distance for 800 m from the point the sign is observed. In contrast, a sign displaying "200 m" indicates the actual distance from the sign's location to where the rule applies. This means that upon seeing a 200 m sign, drivers must begin maintaining the 8 m distance 200 m further down the road.

Answer to the question regarding the distance to the application point.

The penalties for violating either of these signs do not differ in their legal basis or fine amount. This is because the core violation for both is "failure to maintain distance as prescribed by the minimum distance sign".

Under Decree 168/2024, if a driver fails to maintain the required distance within the sign's effective range, the fine for car drivers will be 800.000-1 million dong.
