With their higher ground clearance, modern designs, advanced technology, and affordable prices, B-segment SUVs are becoming increasingly popular among first-time car buyers in Vietnam, replacing traditional sedans of the same size. In the first half of 2025, the VinFast VF 6 and Toyota Yaris Cross were two of the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the market. Meanwhile, only the Vios sedan remained on this list.
The entire B-segment SUV segment (excluding electric vehicles) saw sales of 19,931 units in the first half of 2025, a 21% increase compared to the same period last year. In 2024, VinFast did not disclose specific sales figures for each model.
Including VF 6 sales, B-segment SUV sales exceeded 28,400 units in the first half of the year. This is the highest sales volume ever recorded for this segment during the first six months of a year.
In terms of sales ranking, the VF 6 led the segment with over 8,500 units sold, surpassing its gasoline-powered competitors by approximately 3,100 units. Benefiting from lower operating costs, exemption from registration fees, and free charging at VinFast stations, the VF 6 attracted both individual consumers and ride-sharing services. Gasoline-powered models were purchased primarily by individual consumers.

The VF 6's wider market reach has led to a sales surge in the past year. Currently, the VinFast model holds approximately 43% of the segment's market share.
In the gasoline-powered vehicle segment, the Toyota Yaris Cross overtook the Mitsubishi Xforce to claim the top sales spot. Continuous discounts since the beginning of 2025 have increased the Yaris Cross's appeal. Sales of the Toyota model reached 5,420 units in the first six months, a 27% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This represents the highest growth rate among its competitors.
Facing pressure from the Yaris Cross, the Xforce also engaged in price reductions and sales promotions over the past three months to regain its advantage. The Yaris Cross currently outsells the Xforce by 845 units. This gap is not substantial, and the ongoing competition between these two Japanese models promises further developments.
The top two sales positions in the gasoline vehicle segment belong to Japanese manufacturers. The Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, representing South Korean manufacturers, hold the next two positions. With changing consumer trends, Japanese competitors are implementing more effective pricing and equipment strategies. Many sales experts believe it will be challenging for the South Korean duo to regain their previous dominance in the segment.
The slowest-selling models in the segment remain the familiar Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3. However, a positive sign is that sales of both models have grown as demand for the entire segment has increased. In the first half of 2025, the Honda model sold nearly 2,600 units, a 13% increase, while Mazda's offering reached nearly 1,600 units, an 8% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
The first half of 2025 also saw two new entrants in the B-segment SUV category: the Skoda Kushaq and Geely Coolray. In July, Vietnamese consumers gained another option with the BYD Atto 2.
