Why are bicycle lanes in Ho Chi Minh City red?

Red is often used for danger warnings, so why were bicycle lanes painted red?

A reader, Pham Tri, recently posed a question regarding the distinctive red color of bicycle lanes in Ho Chi Minh City. Tri noted that red is commonly associated with warnings or danger, prompting curiosity about this particular color choice for cycling infrastructure.

Pham Tri observed that many countries abroad typically utilize blue for bicycle lanes, or sometimes no specific color at all, opting instead for painted bicycle symbols and clear boundary lines. The reader expressed concern that the red color, especially under TP HCM's year-round sunshine, can be quite harsh on the eyes for cyclists. The question remains: why not use a more visually soothing color like blue to enhance the cycling experience?
