Yaris Cross: A key player in Toyota Vietnam's one-million-vehicle journey

The B-segment crossover continued to be Toyota Vietnam's best-selling model in June, with 1,150 units sold.

For years, Toyota Vietnam has maintained its market-leading sales position thanks to models like the Vios and Corolla Cross. Now, the company has found a new star performer: the Yaris Cross. Imported from Indonesia, this B-segment crossover entered the segment later than most competitors, but quickly became a top seller.

In June, Yaris Cross sales reached 1,150 units, placing it among the top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam. This marks the third consecutive month that the model has sold over 1,000 units. From the beginning of the year, the Yaris Cross has sold 5,420 units, leading the B-segment SUV category for both gasoline and hybrid models.

First-half 2025 sales for the Yaris Cross are up 44% compared to the same period in 2024. Compared to competitors with internal combustion engines, the Toyota model has seen the highest sales growth. Following the Yaris Cross is the Mitsubishi Xforce, which increased by 17% with 4,575 units sold in the first half of 2025.

The Yaris Cross entered the Vietnamese market in 9/2023 as a newcomer, at a time when the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta dominated the segment. In addition to being a strong product, competitive pricing and promotional strategies further enhanced the Japanese model's appeal. That year, the Yaris Cross sold over 11,100 units.

Since 2024, the Toyota model and the Xforce have formed a leading duo in gasoline and hybrid B-segment SUV sales. This reflects a shift in consumer preference from Korean to Japanese vehicles in this segment. In the first half of 2025, the Hyundai Creta ranked third in sales with 3,163 units, followed by the Seltos with 2,605 units.

Within Toyota Vietnam's current sales structure, the B-segment SUV is the best-selling product, surpassing the "national sedan" Vios. The consistent popularity of the Yaris Cross in recent months has been instrumental in driving Toyota's sales to the milestone of one million vehicles sold in Vietnam in early July.

The Yaris Cross can be considered a strategic product for Toyota in Vietnam, as the trend of consumer preference shifting from sedans to CUVs/SUVs becomes increasingly apparent. With its compact size, plentiful amenities, and reasonable price point for first-time car buyers, B-segment models like the Yaris Cross are often preferred.

According to sales experts, the Yaris Cross represents the Japanese approach to the B-segment SUV market, a segment once dominated by Korean cars. Toyota built this model based on three factors: modern design, rich amenities, and the application of new technologies, aiming to recapture market share from competitors.

Thanh Huyen (TP HCM), owner of a gasoline-powered Yaris Cross, said the Japanese model has a youthful, angular design and high practicality. "I'm satisfied with the features on the car, they're easy to use and didn't take long to get used to," she said. "Cars like the Corolla Cross and Yaris Cross have changed Toyota's image in the eyes of consumers. The car's design has its own personality, with amenities and technology that suit modern consumer trends."

Quoc Thanh (Hanoi) said one of the reasons he chose to buy the Yaris Cross was the hybrid technology. According to him, this technology has been applied by Toyota in many models such as the Corolla Cross and Altis, providing fuel efficiency, an enjoyable driving experience, and independence from charging station infrastructure.

"The fuel consumption of the Yaris Cross hybrid in mixed driving conditions is about 3.8 liters/100 km, lower than B-segment sedans despite its larger weight and size," Thanh said. "Hybrid technology isn't very common in Vietnam yet, but with Toyota, I have confidence in the quality."

Following its predecessor, the Corolla Cross, the Yaris Cross breaks the stereotype of sparsely equipped Toyota vehicles. It even leads the technology trend with its hybrid engine and Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) package. Both the gasoline and hybrid (HEV) versions of the Yaris Cross feature this driver-assistance technology package. Features of the TSS include: automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, front vehicle departure alert, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and accelerator control.

Currently, many Toyota dealerships are holding "One Million Vehicles on the Road" events, allowing customers to experience the company's diverse range of vehicles, participate in test drives, workshops, and minigames. In July, to celebrate the milestone of one million vehicles sold, Toyota and its dealer network are offering special promotions for the Yaris Cross.

Specifically, all Yaris Cross versions are being offered with a discount equivalent to 50% of the registration fee, which translates to a reduction of 33-38 million VND in rolling costs. Customers can also purchase the car with loan interest rates starting from 5.49% per year (HEV version) and 5.99% for the gasoline version. The Yaris Cross is priced at 650 million VND and 765 million VND in Vietnam, for the gasoline and hybrid versions respectively.
