CMA CGM expands container terminal at Khalifa port

AD Ports Group (UAE) signs agreement with French shipping line CMA CGM to expand container terminal at Khalifa port, amid increasing operational demand after one year of operation.

According to AD Ports Group, the expansion project is valued at USD 115 million. It will be funded based on the current ownership structure, with CMA CGM holding 70% and AD Ports Group 30%. Since commencing operations in 12/2024, the CMA Terminals Khalifa Port facility has experienced significant demand and positive operational performance.

Expected to be completed in early 2028, the project will increase the terminal's capacity by 50%, from 1,8 million TEU to 2,7 million TEU annually. This expansion will boost Khalifa Port's total container handling capacity by approximately 9%, reaching 10,5 million TEU per year.

CMA Terminals Khalifa Port is one of three container terminals at the port operated by international shipping lines. Situated in the North Quay area, the facility features two berths totaling 800 meters in length with an 18,5-meter draft, capable of accommodating the largest container vessels currently in operation.

The expansion will extend the berths by 50% to 1.200 meters, simultaneously increasing the storage yard area by over 40%, from 464.000 sqm to 667.000 sqm. It also includes additional technical infrastructure, such as: a reefer container storage system and other operational support facilities.

AD Ports Group (UAE) is an Abu Dhabi-based developer and operator of ports, logistics, and industrial zones in the United Arab Emirates. The company manages an integrated logistics ecosystem, connecting the Middle East with global trade routes. Khalifa Port, Abu Dhabi's strategic deep-water port, is a key asset for AD Ports, serving as the emirate's maritime gateway.

CMA CGM, headquartered in Marseille, France, is among the largest shipping lines globally, operating a container route network spanning over 160 countries.
