Galaxy Cinema owner escapes losses

After four consecutive years of hundreds of billions of VND in losses, Galaxy Entertainment Holding, owner of the Galaxy Cinema chain, reported a profit of over 40 billion VND in 2025.

Galaxy Entertainment Holding Joint Stock Company's 2025 financial report shows a profit after tax of nearly 40,3 billion VND. This marks a significant improvement compared to the loss of over 126 billion VND recorded in 2024.

This is the first time since the company began disclosing information in 2021 that it has reported a positive profit. However, Galaxy Entertainment Holding still carries an accumulated loss of nearly 250 billion VND.

By the end of 2025, Galaxy EE's equity slightly increased to over 454,3 billion VND, primarily due to the reduction in accumulated losses. Furthermore, during this period, the company's subsidiaries also operated profitably, contributing over 231 billion VND in earnings.

Galaxy Entertainment Holding's total liabilities decreased by over 19%, settling at approximately 994 billion VND. The majority of this consists of other payables, with financial debt reduced to just over 146 billion VND, entirely comprising bank loans.

Last year, the company fully settled two bond lots issued in 2021, which carried an annual interest rate of 12%. It incurred approximately 21 billion VND in interest payments to bondholders and did not report any payment delays.

The return to profitability for the owner of Galaxy Cinema further underscores the strong recovery and development of the film industry. Previously, CGV Vietnam reported revenue of approximately 253,6 billion KRW in 2025, equivalent to 4.689 billion VND, marking an increase of over 22% compared to the previous year. Operating profit also reached a record high of about 37,4 billion KRW, or 691,5 billion VND. The management attributed these results to the significant growth of the overall film market, and domestic films in particular, over the past year.

At a strategic partner conference held in mid-March, CGV Vietnam announced that the total box office revenue for the entire market in 2025 reached 5.593 billion VND, an increase of 24% from the previous year. This figure represents an increase of over 35% compared to the pre-pandemic period in 2019, setting a new record in the history of the film industry.

This revenue was achieved through the sale of over 70 million movie tickets last year. Total ticket sales increased by 29% compared to 2024, also reaching an unprecedented level. The primary driver behind this growth was the abundant supply of domestic films, which dominated the market and became the locomotive for the entire film industry. Domestic films saw robust growth, increasing their share of total box office revenue from just 25% in 2016 to 62% in 2025.

Galaxy Entertainment Holding Joint Stock Company operates various business units, including film producer Galaxy Production, film distributor Galaxy Studio, cinema chain Galaxy Cinema, online streaming platform Galaxy Play, and online education platform Galaxy Education, among others.

The company is widely recognized as the force behind the Galaxy Cinema chain, one of the first private companies in the film sector, established in 2003. It currently owns 25 cinema complexes, with the highest concentration in TP HCM and the southern provinces.

Recently, securities companies and analysts have predicted that Galaxy Entertainment Holding is among the group of businesses expected to conduct an initial public offering (IPO) in the 2026-2027 period. However, the company has not yet commented on the matter.
