Starting 1/8, two of the largest fuel distributors in the market, Petrolimex and PVOIL, will pilot the sale of E10 gasoline, a biofuel containing 10% ethanol blended with mineral gasoline. Petrolimex will conduct the pilot in Ho Chi Minh City, while PVOIL will implement it in Hanoi and Hai Phong. This is the first step in the roadmap for a nationwide transition to green fuels, expected to begin in 2026.
E10 biofuel, comprising 10% bio-ethanol mixed with 90% mineral gasoline, is considered a key solution for reducing CO2 emissions, promoting the ethanol agriculture sector, and diversifying energy sources. According to the government's roadmap, E10 biofuel will gradually replace mineral gasoline in the market.
The current value-added tax (VAT) rate for gasoline is 8%, which will be maintained until the end of next year, according to a National Assembly resolution.
This year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade allocated a minimum total supply of over 29.5 million cubic meters/tons of various petroleum products to key traders. In the first half of the year, businesses prepared approximately 13.86 million cubic meters/tons for the domestic market, equivalent to 47% of the plan. However, the actual consumption was 12.6 million cubic meters/tons, resulting in an inventory of about 1.7-1.8 million cubic meters/tons.
