Raw cashew imports exceed 3 billion USD

By mid-July, Vietnamese businesses had spent over 3 billion USD importing raw cashews, primarily from Cambodia, marking the highest figure for the same period ever.

Vietnam's raw cashew imports reached 3,024 billion USD by 15/7, with a volume of 1,81 million tons, according to statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs. This represents a 12,3% increase in value and a 4% increase in volume compared to the same period last year.

Cambodia remains Vietnam's largest supplier of raw cashews, accounting for 54,2% of the total volume and 56,3% of the total import value. Vietnam imported 980,700 tons of cashews from Cambodia, valued at over 1,7 billion USD. This signifies a 10,3% increase in volume and a 25,9% rise in value compared to the previous year's corresponding period.

Beyond Cambodia, Vietnam also sources cashews from various African nations, including Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, and Nigeria.

Despite being the world's largest exporter of processed cashew kernels, Vietnam's domestic raw material supply only partially meets the processing industry's demand. This necessitates businesses to import significant quantities of raw cashews. After initial processing and manufacturing into cashew kernels and other cashew products, these goods are then exported to major markets such as the US, China, and Europe.

Conversely, data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs indicates that as of 15/7, Vietnam exported nearly 373,800 tons of various cashew nuts, generating close to 2,63 billion USD. While export volume saw a slight decrease compared to the same period last year, the value increased by 3,1%.

With import value surpassing export value, the cashew industry continues to experience a trade deficit. This trend persists as demand for raw materials for processing grows, and domestic supply struggles to meet the capacity of local factories.
