On 22/5, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training announced the establishment of five new high schools and the appointment of three principals, aiming to alleviate significant enrollment pressure. These schools will collectively provide nearly 3,400 new 10th grade spots, primarily in high-density residential areas.
Among the new institutions, Le Thi Rieng Primary, Secondary, and High School, located in Thoi An ward, was created by renovating and repurposing the former District 12 People's Committee headquarters. This year, the school is set to admit 450 10th grade students, with Luong Van Minh appointed as its principal.
Similarly, Thoai Ngoc Hau High School, situated in Tan Phu ward, was also established through the conversion of the former Tan Phu District People's Committee headquarters and will enroll 675 10th grade students. Nguyen Thi Tuy Phuong has been appointed principal. Ha Huy Tap High School, located in Di An ward, underwent renovation from the former Di An Vocational Intermediate School and will admit 720 students. Pham Phuong Binh serves as its principal.
The remaining two schools, Phan Van Hon High School in Dong Hung Thuan ward and Vo Nguyen Giap High School in Phu My ward, are entirely new constructions. They will admit 810 and 675 10th grade students respectively this year.
The rapid progress in converting old administrative buildings and constructing new schools is a key component of a 150-day campaign. This initiative, launched by the city chairman in March, aims to complete 1,000 new classrooms for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year.
Looking ahead, the Department of Education and Training plans to expand 10th grade admissions through an application process next year. The long-term goal is to achieve universal high school education and eventually eliminate the 10th grade entrance exam once the educational infrastructure can fully meet student demand.
This year, Ho Chi Minh City saw over 169,600 students graduate secondary school. Out of more than 151,300 candidates who registered for the public 10th grade entrance exam, approximately 118,000 students successfully passed. The exam took place on 1-2/6.
