Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education: Principals can extend Tet holiday to 14 days

Ho Chi Minh City students' official Tet holiday is 11 days, but principals have the flexibility to extend it to 14 days, according to the Department of Education.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee finalized the 2026 Tet holiday schedule for preschool, general education, and continuing education students at 11 days, from 12/2/2026 to 22/2/2026. This period spans from the 25th of the twelfth lunar month to the end of the 6th of the first lunar month, similar to last year's break. This information was outlined in a guide sent to schools by the Department of Education and Training (DOET).

While the official document did not explicitly mention exceptions, an official from the DOET clarified that the 12/2/2026 start date, which falls midweek, allows for flexibility. Schools that can ensure their curriculum content and progress may grant students an additional three days off prior to the official start, from 9/2/2026 to 11/2/2026. Students are scheduled to return to school on 23/2/2026, the 7th of the first lunar month, aligning with the national worker holiday schedule for parental convenience.

Principals are empowered to make this decision for their respective schools without needing to seek permission from the DOET, the official stated.

Under regulations from the Ministry of Education and Training, provinces and cities can independently plan their academic year, provided they complete 35 weeks of actual study. Semester one is to conclude before 18/1/2026, and semester two before 31/5/2026.

To date, approximately five localities have announced their 2026 Tet holiday schedules for students. Most have opted for an 11-day break, with Hanoi setting a maximum of nine days.

Nationwide, the 2026 Lunar New Year holiday for workers is scheduled from 14/2/2026 to 22/2/2026. This nine-day period runs from the 27th of the twelfth lunar month until the end of the 6th of the first lunar month.
