International math exam results canceled in Vietnam due to leak

A leak of the AS Level Mathematics exam in late April led to its cancellation in multiple countries, including Vietnam, requiring all students to retake the test.

Cambridge International Examinations Board updated this information on its official website and sent letters to affected schools last week.

The AS Level Mathematics exam (paper code 9709/12), administered on 29/4 in administrative regions 3 and 4 (comprising Vietnam, some Southeast Asian, South Asian, European, Middle Eastern, and African countries), was disseminated before its scheduled date.

Due to the extensive spread of the leak, Cambridge decided to cancel the results of this exam. The board did not specify the number of affected students. All students will take a replacement exam on 9/6 without any additional fees. The results announcement date remains 11/8 and will be accepted by universities.

Cambridge acknowledged that retaking the exam would add to students' workload. However, the decision received consensus from many school leaders, aiming to ensure students' scores accurately reflect their abilities and maintain transparency.

The organization stated it is working closely with authorities to address those involved and will implement the strictest measures, including permanent disqualification from future exams for offenders.

AS Level Mathematics is a subject for high school students following the Cambridge system (the British national curriculum), primarily those aged 16-19.

The exam paper includes pure mathematics, mechanics, and probability and statistics. It consists of 10 questions to be completed in nearly two hours, with a maximum total score of 75. The results can be used for university applications in the UK, Australia, the US, and many other countries.

According to Cambridge International, there are currently over 10,000 Cambridge schools in more than 160 countries worldwide, with nearly 100 establishments in Vietnam. The organization has not publicly released the number of AS-A Level candidates in Vietnam each year. However, on its website, VAS Hanoi school reported that approximately 280 students participated in this exam last year, while Nguyen Sieu school had over 120 students.
