This adjustment is part of a decision to revise training standards for microchips and semiconductors by the Ministry of Education and Training on 22/7.
Accordingly, applicants to these programs must have a national high school graduation exam math score in the top 20%. Their combined subject scores must also be in the top 25%. These figures are published annually by the Ministry.
The required subject combination for microchip and semiconductor programs includes math and at least one other science subject, similar to the previous regulation.
In May, the Ministry of Education and Training issued training standards for universities participating in the government's "Semiconductor Industry Manpower Development Program to 2030, with a vision to 2050."
Applicants to microchip and semiconductor programs using high school graduation exam scores needed a total score of at least 80%, equivalent to 24/30 for a three-subject combination. Math scores needed to be at least 8/10.
Eight universities announced this floor score last month. However, according to the 2025 national high school graduation exam score distribution, the average math score dropped significantly from 6.45 last year to 4.78. Many experts believe this requirement made university admissions difficult.
Yesterday, the Hanoi University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, announced the removal of the proposed floor score for semiconductor programs, requiring only a total score of 20 for the three-subject combination. The Vietnam Japan University did similarly but hasn't specified a score.

Speaking to VnExpress on 21/5, Nguyen Anh Dung, Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training, said the Ministry is researching and developing special mechanisms, such as financial support for universities participating in training programs in this field. Students may receive scholarships, tuition waivers, or reductions. Lecturers will also receive incentives and support, specialized training, and priority in scientific research.
To date, the list of participating universities has not been published.
