The school year was originally scheduled to begin on 25/8 across the province. However, forecasts predicted Typhoon Kajiki would make landfall in the Nghe An - Quang Tri region around midday on 25/8, with wind speeds reaching level 12-13, causing heavy rain and a high risk of flash floods and landslides. Therefore, many schools decided to postpone the start of the school year.
"Student safety is our top priority," said Nguyen Ngoc Tan, principal of Nhon Mai Secondary and Primary School for Ethnic Minority Students, formerly in Tuong Duong district. He explained that students at his school must travel across hills, mountains, rivers, and streams to get to class.
In the wards of the former Vinh city, many schools, including Cua Nam 1 Primary School, Le Mao Primary School, and Le Mao Kindergarten, also announced the postponement of the school year start date.
The schools stated they would announce the new start date later. Nguyen Duy Trinh High School, Huynh Thuc Khang High School, and the Provincial Ethnic Minority Boarding High School are expected to postpone the start of school to 27/8.
"Nghe An is in the area affected by the typhoon, so we are very worried about our children if they go to school. The early postponement announcement helps parents feel secure," said Pham Huyen, a parent at Ben Thuy Primary School.
