Sai Gon University removes competency assessment scores for 4 majors

Sai Gon University (SGU) unexpectedly announced it will not use the competency assessment scores from Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) for 4 majors.

Besides education majors, which typically don't use competency assessment scores, the 4 affected majors are: applied mathematics, data science, psychology, and information - library science, according to SGU's July 25 announcement.

The university explained that VNU-HCM does not provide a conversion framework between competency assessment scores and high school graduation exam scores for combinations A00 (math, physics, chemistry) and C00 (literature, history, geography).

Therefore, SGU lacks the basis for converting scores between these two methods for combinations A00 and C00.

Two days ago, VNU-HCM announced the percentile ranking between competency assessment scores and high school graduation exam scores for 4 combinations: A01 (math, physics, English), B00 (math, chemistry, biology), C01 (math, literature, physics), and D01 (math, literature, English). VNU-HCM stated that most students taking the competency assessment also have high school graduation exam scores in these combinations.

This year, SGU is admitting 5,220 students using 4 methods: direct admission as regulated by the Ministry of Education and Training; high school graduation exam scores; VNU-HCM's competency assessment scores; and V-SAT scores. The competency assessment scores are not applicable to education majors.

The minimum scores for admission after conversion range from 17 to 25, mostly increasing by 0.5 to 6 points compared to last year. History - Geography Education has the highest minimum score at 25, a 6-point increase.

Tuition for the 2025 intake is estimated at 78-193 million VND for the entire program (4-4.5 years).

Last year, SGU's standard admission scores ranged from 21.17 to 28.25 based on high school graduation exam results, with History Education having the highest score.
