Master Cu Xuan Tien, head of the Admissions and Student Affairs Office at the University of Economics and Law, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, made this prediction based on the 2025 high school graduation exam scores.
He noted that the average scores for most subjects decreased significantly compared to 2024, with only physics showing a slight increase. Meanwhile, the average math score dropped sharply, with 56.4% of students scoring below average and about 12% achieving 7 or higher. Tien considered these figures record lows for math, indicating a difficult exam designed for assessing student abilities.
English scores did not decline as much; the percentage of students scoring 5 or above even increased by 4.5%. However, the number of high-scoring students decreased. Those scoring 7 or higher accounted for 15%, down 10% from last year. The number of perfect scores also dropped to one-fourth of last year's figure. In chemistry, around 34% of students achieved a perfect score, a decrease of nearly 16%.
Tien predicted that admission scores for programs requiring math, English, and chemistry would drop more significantly than others. Specifically, engineering and technology programs, often assessed using combinations A00 (math, physics, chemistry) and A01 (math, physics, English), might see a 1-2 point decrease.
For combination B00 (math, chemistry, biology), he anticipated a 1.5-2.5 point drop in admission scores for medicine, pharmacy, and natural science programs. Programs using D01 (math, literature, English) and D07 (math, English, chemistry) are expected to decrease by 1-2 points.
At the University of Economics and Law, five of the six admission combinations require both math and English, with the remaining being A00. Therefore, Tien believes the admission scores this year will decrease by 0.5-1.5 points compared to last year.
Popular programs like international business, e-commerce, international economics, marketing, and economic law, which are highly competitive and attract many applicants, may experience a more significant drop or remain unchanged.
"Due to the large discrepancies in admission scores between combinations, the university's admissions council is analyzing and considering adjustment methods to ensure fairness for all candidates," Tien said.
Information about the minimum score and the score conversion formula for the University of Economics and Law, Ho Chi Minh City, will be announced later, no later than 23/7.

The tuition fee at the University of Economics and Law for the 2025 intake is 31.5 million VND per year for Vietnamese programs, a 4 million VND increase from last year. For English programs, the fee is 65 million VND, an increase of over 7 million VND.
Last year, the admission scores based on high school graduation exam results at the University of Economics and Law ranged from 24.39 to 27.44 out of 30, with e-commerce having the highest entry requirement.
