Vietnam National University, Hanoi moves 15,000 students to Hoa Lac

15,000 Vietnam National University, Hanoi students will study at Hoa Lac, including a group from the University of Natural Sciences, while high school students return to the inner city.

Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) announced on 13/4 that this initiative will commence in the 2026-2027 academic year, expanding its student capacity by 2.5 times compared to the present.

Students will be drawn from the Vietnam-Japan University, University of Law, University of Engineering and Technology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, University of Education, University of Natural Sciences, International School, and School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Arts, primarily first-year students.

Notably, this marks the first time students from the University of Natural Sciences will relocate to the Hoa Lac campus. Approximately 900 students are expected, comprising about 38% of the total new student intake. The university has not yet disclosed which departments these students belong to.

Conversely, all students from the High School of Education Sciences (HES) will return to study at their former facility in the inner city. This school admits 400-450 students annually.

Vietnam National University, Hanoi currently comprises 12 undergraduate institutions, along with several junior high and high schools, serving approximately 78,700 learners.

Since 5/2022, VNU has progressively transferred its main administrative offices to the university urban area in Hoa Lac, situated about 35 km from its previous location. This move aligns with a broader government policy to relocate universities from inner-city areas.

The Hoa Lac campus, as per its master plan, spans over 1,113 hectares and is designed to accommodate 65,000 students. VNU is actively developing its infrastructure, including: lecture halls, laboratories, dormitories, a polyclinic, physical training areas, after-hours study spaces, security systems, and parking facilities. Furthermore, the university is collaborating with the Hanoi People's Committee to enhance bus routes connecting to the inner city, while also providing on-campus buses and electric bicycles for student transportation within the campus.
