Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City aims for top 150 mathematics ranking

Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) aims to move its mathematics program into the top 150 globally, according to the QS World University Rankings.

Associate Professor Vu Hai Quan, Director of VNUHCM, shared this goal during a meeting with a delegation of mathematics professors from France on 29/8.

He said VNUHCM is expanding its postgraduate programs and establishing interdisciplinary research groups to achieve this ambitious target by 2030. International collaboration, especially with prestigious French partners, is a key part of this strategy.

Associate Professor Tran Le Quan, Rector of VNUHCM - University of Science, reported over 750 publications in mathematics from 2020 to 2024, featured in Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus indexed journals. Over 75% of these were published in Q1 and Q2 ranked journals.

The mathematics faculty comprises 128 members with doctorates or higher, including 16 associate professors and 4 professors. VNUHCM has over 1,500 undergraduate students, 370 master's students, and 60 doctoral candidates in mathematics-related fields.

For the past 17 years, VNUHCM - University of Science has partnered with 4 French institutions to offer a master's program in applied mathematics. Approximately 300 students have graduated, with over half pursuing doctoral degrees abroad, becoming professors and associate professors at reputable universities.

By 2030, VNUHCM plans to offer joint master's programs in data science and artificial intelligence (taught in English), co-supervise and eventually jointly award doctoral degrees, establish international research groups, and strengthen collaboration with the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the French-Vietnamese International Laboratory for Mathematics Research (IRL FVMA).
