The couple initially planned to hold the reception at the 700-year-old Scuola Vecchia della Misericordia but changed plans due to concerns about protests. The new venue, surrounded by water, offered enhanced security with its raised bridges preventing land access. This ensured the safety of the artists, entrepreneurs, and influential figures attending Bezos' wedding.
Reuters reported approximately 1,000 people protested the event that day. Activists and locals marched, arguing that Venice was being "packaged" as a gift for the ultra-rich. However, officials refuted these claims, stating the wedding would bring economic benefits to the city.

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said, "Those who protest are going against the history of Venice, a place inherently linked to relationships, exchange, and trade. Mr. Bezos embodies the true Venetian spirit. He is more Venetian than the protesters".
According to Brugnaro, Bezos did not set any conditions for holding the wedding in Venice. City Hall only learned of the businessman's donations exceeding three million euros after they were made. The mayor hopes Bezos will return to the city for business ventures.
