Chow Yun-fat boosts Singapore eatery's business

A bak kut teh restaurant owner in Singapore credits Chow Yun-fat with saving her family's business from financial ruin.

According to Zaobao, the Hong Kong actor visited Singapore for the 2025 Star Awards on 6/7. During his trip, he and his wife dined at their favorite bak kut teh restaurant on South Bridge Road. The owner, Ms. Thai Thuy Thuy, considers Chow Yun-fat her family’s benefactor.

Ms. Thuy’s father initially struggled when he opened the first bak kut teh restaurant, selling only a few bowls a day. Chow Yun-fat dined there and later brought director Ang Lee. He also recommended the restaurant to friends visiting Singapore.

"Gradually, some actors, especially Hong Kong artists, started visiting, and our business improved significantly," Ms. Thuy said. "We are deeply grateful to Mr. Chow. He saved our restaurant."

Ms. Thuy considers Chow Yun-fat a regular, as he has visited four times, occasionally ordering takeout. On 3/7, he visited the branch managed by Ms. Thuy's daughter, chatting with her and inquiring about her father and the restaurant's progress. He expressed his happiness for the family’s expansion and the next generation carrying on the culinary tradition.

Ms. Thuy’s father regretted missing the opportunity to thank Chow Yun-fat in person. Following the actor’s visit on 3/7, business at all three locations surged, with orders increasing by over 30%.

Chow Yun-fat is considered a "son-in-law" of Singapore, as his wife, Jasmine Tan, was born there. Her father is millionaire Tan Xu Lam. After marrying the actor in 1987, Tan moved to Hong Kong and managed his career. According to Next Apple, during the 1980s and 1990s, Tan skillfully negotiated contracts for her husband, often dealing with organized crime figures. Her straightforward and decisive manner earned her the respect of some of these figures, leading to successful collaborations.

The 70-year-old actor has reduced his film work to focus on fitness, photography, and diving. He also studies foot reflexology, massage therapy, and first aid for exercise-related injuries. In his 50-year career, Chow Yun-fat achieved success with films like A Better Tomorrow, Shanghai Grand, The Soong Sisters, A Touch of Zen, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and God of Gamblers. In 2/2025, he appeared in Detective Chinatown 1900, playing the head of a Chinese association in the USA—a rare film role for him in the past five years.
