Comedian Bac Hai dies at 55

Comedian Bac Hai, a once-famous figure on "Gala Laughs," died at the age of 55 on the morning of 13/8, after a period of battling serious illness.

His wife, Hoang Thi Kim Thoa, said he suffered from multiple ailments, including cirrhosis. Earlier that morning, he was still relatively lucid, asking his wife to buy breakfast. However, by the time she returned, he had passed away. "He didn't have time to leave any last wishes," she said.

Artist Binh Tinh was heartbroken upon hearing the news from Bac Hai's wife. Due to the family's difficult financial situation and their young child, Binh Tinh plans to help organize the funeral arrangements with some colleagues.

For many years, the comedian's health declined due to illness. In 2022, he was hospitalized in the emergency room at Binh Dan Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, for liver damage. He was subsequently diagnosed with severe cirrhosis, kidney atrophy, and spinal stenosis.

According to Ms. Thoa, since becoming ill, he was unable to perform, leaving the family in financial difficulty. She previously made a living selling dried fish in Can Gio, but quit to care for her husband over the past year. The couple lived with their son, Bac Hien, in a rented room in Nhon Trach, Dong Nai.

Throughout this period, he received support from many friends and colleagues. Actors Viet Huong and Huynh Tien Khoa appealed to fellow artists for donations to help Bac Hai overcome his hardship, receiving contributions from Binh Tinh, Don Nguyen, and Kim Dao.

Bac Hai, whose full name is Vu Bac Hai, began his acting career in the 1990s. With his tall, thin physique and expressive face, he often played supporting roles, complementing his fellow actors. His name gradually became known through collaborations with Bao Chung and Hong To.

In 2005, the sketch "The Fortune Teller's End," which Bac Hai performed with Hong To on the "Gala Laughs" program, became a hit with audiences, further boosting his popularity. In recent years, with the decline of stage performances, he primarily worked in the Mekong Delta region with younger actors.
