For many years, the comedian's health declined due to illness. In 2022, he was hospitalized in the emergency room at Binh Dan Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, for liver damage. He was subsequently diagnosed with severe cirrhosis, kidney atrophy, and spinal stenosis.
According to Ms. Thoa, since becoming ill, he was unable to perform, leaving the family in financial difficulty. She previously made a living selling dried fish in Can Gio, but quit to care for her husband over the past year. The couple lived with their son, Bac Hien, in a rented room in Nhon Trach, Dong Nai.
Throughout this period, he received support from many friends and colleagues. Actors Viet Huong and Huynh Tien Khoa appealed to fellow artists for donations to help Bac Hai overcome his hardship, receiving contributions from Binh Tinh, Don Nguyen, and Kim Dao.
Bac Hai, whose full name is Vu Bac Hai, began his acting career in the 1990s. With his tall, thin physique and expressive face, he often played supporting roles, complementing his fellow actors. His name gradually became known through collaborations with Bao Chung and Hong To.
