According to Box Office Vietnam, an independent box office tracking site, the latest installment of Detective Conan earned over 52 billion VND between 25/7 and 27/7. During its two preview days on 19/7 and 20/7, the film grossed over 40 billion VND.
Nguyen Khanh Duong, founder of Box Office Vietnam, stated that the film has no competition in domestic theaters. With over 4,000 screenings daily, it has quadrupled the screenings of Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Conan 28 is projected to maintain its high number of screenings and steady ticket sales next week, becoming the biggest hit in Vietnam this summer.
Prior to its Vietnamese release, the film generated significant international buzz. In Japan, the film surpassed 14.4 billion yen (over 97 million USD) in 90 days, ranking 19th on the country's all-time highest-grossing films list. In China, it debuted at the end of June, surpassing Brad Pitt's F1 to top the box office, eventually earning 40 million USD, the highest gross for the series.
This installment marks the return of the Nagano prefectural police trio, centered around Yamato Kansuke, an officer who lost an eye in a severe avalanche. Ten months later, he reunites with detective Mori Kogoro and Conan as they investigate a mysterious assassination. The seemingly unrelated cases share several clues, including Yamato's hazy memories of the past accident.

Directed by Katsuya Shigehara, who also directed The Black Iron Submarine, and written by long-time Conan screenwriter Takeharu Sakurai, the film features the classic detective and action elements of the early series. One highly praised aspect is the revelation of how detective Yamato Kansuke lost his eye, a detail never before revealed in the original manga or anime.
Mori Kogoro is also portrayed with greater depth, no longer relying on his "sleeping detective" persona to solve cases. The death of a former colleague makes him more serious and resourceful, leaving a strong impression in the climax. Many online film forums consider The Black Iron Submarine one of the best installments due to its strong character development.
Ranking second at the Vietnamese box office last weekend was The Fantastic Four: First Steps with 13 billion VND and around 1,500 daily screenings. This film launches Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), paving the way for Avengers: Doomsday, slated for release in 2026. Beyond a simple battle of good versus evil, the film explores family bonds, trust, and sacrifice.
Smurfs came in third, earning 2.6 billion VND. Despite its star-studded voice cast, the film lacked visual and musical appeal, failing to make a mark amidst the summer movie season. The horror films Evil Dead Rise (1.4 billion VND) and Cobweb (986 million VND) ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
