The script is currently being finalized, with filming and release dates yet to be set. Nguyen Quang Dung and his team intend to utilize AI extensively in pre-production and visual effects. This advanced technology aims to streamline the filmmaking process, addressing challenges faced during the first installment. For example, part one required six years of conceptualization and cost planning, with over 1,000 shots employing computer-generated imagery (CGI).
Quang Dung anticipates AI will significantly reduce production time. It will also enable the creation of scenes previously deemed impossible, such as vividly depicting the wild, untamed environment of U Minh forest – a pivotal location where young An begins his journey.

Part two will continue An's tumultuous quest to find his father and will explore the love story between Vo Tong and Ut Trong in depth. Quang Dung expressed his desire to retain the original cast, contingent on their availability. He noted that while the first film generated 160 billion dong, including revenue from video-on-demand (VOD) platforms, high production costs resulted in limited profits.
The film "Southern Forest Land" draws inspiration from writer Doan Gioi's novel and director Nguyen Vinh Son's "Dat Phuong Nam." Set in the early 20th century, the narrative follows An (Hao Khang), a young boy adrift in the Mekong Delta, searching for his father. Throughout his journey, he receives assistance from compassionate locals, learning resilience and maturity amidst hardship. The story seamlessly blends An's personal quest with the anti-French colonial resistance movement in Southern Vietnam, featuring a cast including Hao Khang, Tuan Tran, Tran Thanh, Mai Tai Phen, Hong Anh, Tien Luat, and Bang Di.
Upon its premiere in 10/2023, the film faced criticism for perceived historical inaccuracies and for allegedly overstating the role of Thien Dia Hoi. In response, the producers revised the film, changing references to Thien Dia Hoi and Nghia Hoa Doan in the dialogues to Chinh Nghia Hoi and Nam Hoa Doan, respectively.
