Hong Diem: Actress known for portraying hardship

Actress Hong Diem, 42, often plays characters betrayed by their husbands and possessing a vulnerable nature.

Hong Diem is filming a new project, a year after the series "Rescue Station of the Heart" concluded. Under an image posted by Ha Viet Dung on social media, many viewers expressed their fondness for her previous roles, but also their anticipation for a fresh performance from the actress.

On screen, Hong Diem is often associated with a gentle, meek image, often portraying characters whose lives are filled with hardship. In the film "Moscow - Season of Change," directed by Trong Trinh, she played Phuong, a dreamy woman with a beautiful but unfinished first love with Minh (Hong Dang). After a long time apart, the two coincidentally meet again in Moscow. Despite being married, she cannot suppress her rekindled feelings. The awkward situation arises as Minh is a close friend of Phuong's husband, leading her to grapple with her emotions and responsibilities to her family.

Hong Diem’s character Phuong in "Journey of Justice," directed by Nguyen Mai Hien, is a law graduate who chooses to be a homemaker for Hoang (Viet Anh), her husband. Trouble arises when a compromising video of Hoang and a young woman is leaked online. Her husband's scandal leaves Phuong devastated and heartbroken. With the support of Nguyet (Thu Quynh) and Quan (Quoc Huy), her university friends, she regains her spirit and rediscovers herself as a lawyer.

In the series "A Lifetime of Resentment," directed by Trong Trinh and Bui Tien Huy, she played Dung, a woman from a poor background. After marrying Dang (Manh Truong) and becoming a daughter-in-law in a wealthy family, Dung is constantly belittled and mistreated by her mother-in-law and disrespected by Dang’s son from a previous marriage. Dieu (Lan Phuong), Phong's (Hong Dang) wife, harbors resentment upon discovering Dung is her husband's former lover and kidnaps Dung’s daughter for 20 years.

Phuong (Hong Diem) reproaches her husband for being constantly busy and inattentive.

With Dung’s passive personality, the actress’s expressions in the film aren't particularly diverse. Many viewers believe her performance was safe, somewhat overshadowed when compared to Lan Phuong's portrayal of Dieu, a complex, scheming character who stops at nothing.

In 2019, Hong Diem made a mark with her role as Khue in the film "Rose on the Left Chest," directed by Vu Truong Khoa. She embodied a housewife, financially dependent on her husband, who betrays her. Following the marital crisis, Khue strives to take control of her life, providing financially to become a pillar of support for her two daughters.

Taking on a familiar role, Hong Diem’s acting showed remarkable progress. She portrays the full spectrum of emotions as her character is abandoned by her husband, evoking empathy from viewers. Artist Hoang Cuc expressed admiration for Hong Diem, praising the multifaceted nature of her portrayal of Khue. She won the Impressive Actress award at the 2020 VTV Awards.

In the series "Reverse Sunshine," directed by Vu Truong Khoa, Hong Diem plays Minh Chau, the heiress of the Cao Pharmaceutical group. Chau possesses a more rebellious personality compared to Hong Diem’s previous roles, but her life is also filled with turmoil.

Her character falls in love with Kien (Hong Dang), but he exploits her feelings to take revenge on Mrs. Bach Cuc (Thu Ha), her mother. In one episode, the scene where Vy (Manh Cuong) assaults Chau and films it to blackmail her drew criticism from viewers, who deemed it unnecessarily cruel. The image of Chau struggling to resist and then becoming distraught by the incident evoked sympathy from the audience.

For the role, Hong Diem cut her hair short, took care of her skin, worked on her physique, and paid attention to her wardrobe as her character loves fashion. In the series, she continued her successful collaboration with Hong Dang but maintained her principle of not filming overly intimate scenes. The role of Chau earned Hong Diem the Impressive Actress award at the 2021 VTV Awards.

In "Rescue Station of the Heart," directed by Vu Truong Khoa, Hong Diem returns to the familiar archetype of a meek and somewhat vulnerable character. She plays Ngan Ha, a wealthy heiress whose husband (Nghia, played by Quang Su) uses her for revenge.
