Jeon Ji Hyun is under fire in China for a line in her new film, Tempest, according to Dahe Bao on 20/9. The line, "Why does China like war?", spoken by her character Seo Moon Ju, a former UN ambassador turned political figure, has sparked outrage among many Chinese viewers. The film follows Moon Ju's unexpected rise to power after her husband's mysterious death, aided by mercenary Baek San Ho, played by Kang Dong Won.

Adding fuel to the fire, some Chinese viewers also believe the film denigrates their country by having villains speak Chinese. Other points of contention include a scene set in what's described as Dalian, perceived as being depicted negatively, and a carpet pattern some viewers interpreted as resembling the Chinese flag.
According to Toutiao, calls to boycott both Tempest and Jeon Ji Hyun have emerged. However, some have defended the actress, pointing out that she was simply following the script and director's instructions.

Initially well-received upon its Disney+ release on 10/9, with a 7.1/10 rating on Douban, the film's score has since plummeted to 4.2. Several brands have reportedly removed or hidden Jeon Ji Hyun's advertisements on Chinese sales and advertising platforms.
The 44-year-old Jeon Ji Hyun is one of South Korea's most successful actresses, known for roles in popular films and dramas like My Sassy Girl, Daisy, My Love From the Star, and The Legend of the Blue Sea. In 2021, Hankookilbo reported that Jeon Ji Hyun and Song Hye Kyo were the highest-paid actresses in South Korea, each earning approximately 3.2 billion won for 16 episodes.
The publication noted their strong influence and large fan bases, contributing to their projects' international reach.
Married in 2012, Jeon Ji Hyun has two sons and reduced her acting work after marriage, making fewer public appearances. In the last two years, however, she has returned to the spotlight, attending events both in South Korea and internationally.
