Period drama warrior's look criticized for 'excessive foundation'

Tens of thousands of viewers have criticized the production team of the Chinese series "Truc Ngoc" for overusing foundation in actor Truong Lang Hach's warrior makeup.

A series of videos and photos showing Truong Lang Hach leading troops into battle in the television series "Truc Ngoc" has garnered hundreds of thousands of comments on social media platforms and forums. He portrays Ta Chinh, a character who appears scholarly and frail but is, in reality, a talented general secretly investigating a family massacre and harboring a strong desire for revenge.

The series features scenes of Truong Lang Hach leading his army into combat. Hundreds of thousands of viewers found Ta Chinh's appearance overly pristine, with a thick layer of makeup on his face.

The character's hair also appeared neat and shiny, which many felt did not reflect a general who had just endured a life-or-death battle. Furthermore, audiences ridiculed Ta Chinh's elaborate head accessories, deeming them unsuitable for the plot and context of the work.

The keywords "Truong Lang Hach, foundation general" went viral on Douyin and Weibo, with viewers making humorous comments such as: "Issue the order: the general's foundation has washed off, let's pause the battle until tomorrow", and "8 am battle, 5 am the general wakes up for makeup". Many stated they do not oppose actors wearing makeup for personal preference, but in films, the appearance must align with the plot and serve the narrative of the work.

A segment of fans supported the production team, arguing that beauty standards differ across eras, and a general does not always need to be muscular or weather-beaten.

Amid the controversy surrounding "Truc Ngoc", videos of actor Ha Nhuan Dong portraying Hang Vu in "So Han Truyen Ky" resurfaced and became popular again. Many viewers noted that Ha Nhuan Dong's makeup and styling effectively conveyed the power of a martial general while highlighting the intense atmosphere on the battlefield.

The series "Truc Ngoc", directed by Tang Khanh Kiet and also starring Dien Hy Vi, Nham Hao, and Uyen Nhiem, premiered in early March. Lead actor Truong Lang Hach, 29 years old, is a prominent figure in Chinese cinema, known for his roles in series such as "Thuong Lan Quyet", "Van Chi Vu", "Ho Hac Yeu Su Luc", and "Ninh An Nhu Mong".
