The beauty of Russian ballet in 'Romeo and Juliet'

Artists tell the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet in the ballet of the same name, performed at Ho Guom Theater, on the evening of 26/3.

The production unfolds in three acts, commencing with the conflict between the Montague and Capulet families. At a Capulet ball, Romeo, son of the Montagues, wears a mask to blend in. Ironically, he meets and falls in love with Juliet, a Capulet.

Artists from the Russian State Ballet presented 'Romeo and Juliet' on the evening of 26/3 in Hanoi, their second performance after 'The Nutcracker' on 25/3. Over two and a half hours, ballet vividly brought the timeless love story to life. The production, adapted from William Shakespeare's work, was choreographed by People's Artist Vyacheslav Gordeev.

'Romeo and Juliet' stands as one of the Russian State Ballet's recent productions, captivating audiences with its impressive 'pas de deux' – duets that showcase emotional intensity, technical skill, and seamless coordination between two dancers.

Within a romantic setting, the two dancers perform graceful movements, evoking the intertwining emotions of the couple.

In 1981, while at the peak of his career at the Bolshoi Theater, Vyacheslav Gordeev took the helm of the Classical Ballet Troupe. This company later evolved into the Russian State Ballet. His extensive experience and organizational prowess were instrumental in establishing the theater as one of Russia's premier ballet ensembles.

Following romantic vows, Romeo and Juliet secretly marry in act two.

Tragedy unfolds as Juliet's cousin, Tybalt (far right), clashes with Mercutio (center), Romeo's close friend. Witnessing his friend's death, Romeo exacts revenge, kills Tybalt, and is banished from Verona. Meanwhile, Juliet is forced into another marriage.

However, a tragic misunderstanding leads Romeo to take his own life in Juliet's tomb. Each movement of the ballerina conveys the agonizing pain of losing her beloved.

Throughout the performance, the audience applauded the pas de deux and scenes portraying characters' inner emotions through movement. Sergei Prokofiev's music underscored the dramatic conflicts and romantic moments of Romeo and Juliet.

In the final act, Juliet fakes her death to escape her forced marriage. The vision of their reunion and happiness spurs her determination to execute the plan.

The stage design effectively transported the audience to medieval Europe. In certain segments, dancers appeared to merge with the backdrop, creating a striking visual effect.

Le Linh, an 18-year-old Hanoi resident with nearly six years of dance training, expressed her surprise at seeing a complete live ballet for the first time, having previously only watched excerpts. She was particularly impressed by the dancers' duets and the production's music.

Following their final Hanoi performance on 27/3, the troupe is scheduled to present 'Romeo and Juliet' in Da Nang on 29/3.

Vietnam Maritime Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MSB), a partner for art programs at Ho Guom Theater, conveyed a message highlighting classical art as a symbol of sophistication and a bridge between those who appreciate beauty and timeless cultural values. Presenting classic works as part of the 'Thanh am tinh hoa' (Essence of Sound) event series offers customers experiences beyond traditional financial services.
