A pale face, cheekbones subtly shadowed with gray, and lips tinged with purple or light gray. This "tired girl" look is currently a popular trend among gen Z, according to CNN.
For years, products like concealers and eye creams have flourished, reflecting the traditional beauty standard of a fresh, radiant, and flawless appearance. Traditionally, looking tired has been associated with poor health, aging, and being less attractive. The "tired girl" makeup trend embraces the opposite: accepting the imperfections people usually try to hide.

Experts suggest this style gained popularity from the Netflix series Wednesday. In the series, lead actress Jenna Ortega sports dark circles under her eyes and pale skin. She also attracted attention with this makeup look on the red carpet at the season 2 premiere in London on 30/7.
Over the past two months, many celebrities have embraced this makeup trend, including actress Lily Rose-Depp, model and musician Gabbriette, and influencers like Emma Chamberlain, Danielle Marcan, and Lara Violetta. By the end of July, the tired girl makeup trend had become a hot topic on TikTok, with countless videos demonstrating how to achieve the sleep-deprived look, some of the most popular garnering over 300,000 views.
Kim Brown, makeup artist and beauty director at Glass magazine, told CNN, "It's a celebration of authenticity. 'Tired girl' has a strong, cool vibe."
Unlike the goth style, "tired girl" creates a gloomier appearance with paler skin and deep-set dark eyes. It also differs from the Aegyo-sal (smiling eye bags) makeup trend popular in South Korea, which emphasizes puffy under-eye bags. This trend has sparked controversy for supposedly creating a more youthful look.
"Tired girl" is considered most similar to the free-spirited grunge fashion of the 1990s. Irish makeup artist and hairstylist Tara McDonald believes almost anyone can achieve this makeup look without needing advanced skills. The style also reflects the lives of young people today, with their constant pressures in education and work.
