Toc Tien: 'Cherishing past hurts'

Singer Toc Tien, 37, says she cherishes every past moment in relationships, from joy to hurt.

The singer released her first music product after her divorce, garnering public attention. The song "Nguoi con thuong em khong?" (Do You Still Love Me?) portrays a story of two people facing the decision to end or continue a relationship. A highlight of the song is how the characters jointly recall past connections.

At the MV launch on the afternoon of 5/6 in Ho Chi Minh City, when asked about her attitude toward a past relationship, Toc Tien stated that a relationship only leaves lingering regrets if the two individuals shared many beautiful memories. She believes all moments in love are natural and precious. She noted that "to still be loved is to still be cherished".

Earlier, in January, the singer announced her divorce from music producer Hoang Touliver after 10 years together. She stated they parted ways respectfully, with mutual understanding and appreciation. According to Toc Tien, without Hoang Touliver, she would not have achieved her thriving career. She remains grateful to her ex-husband and hopes they can both move forward gently on their separate paths.

The 8x generation singer says she is enjoying a peaceful single life, guided by two principles: understanding herself and flowing with nature. "I feel full of energy for life, for my profession, and dedicate maximum focus to my work", she said.

"Nguoi con thuong em khong?" is a ballad written specifically for Toc Tien by young musician Huynh Van. The lyrics were developed from a poetic verse in actor Minh Du's poem "Buong" (Let Go): "When the Earth becomes square, then you and I will learn to let go of one person". After obtaining copyright for these two lines, the singer asked the musician to adjust the lyrics to best suit her singing style. Toc Tien now opts for a restrained approach to make her music more natural, authentic, and feminine.

For the visual aspect, the MV was produced by the team of young director Nguyen Viet Anh, featuring actor Tran Ngoc Vang as the male lead. The content revolves around the characters' memories in an old house filled with shared moments. Toc Tien and Tran Ngoc Vang share many emotional scenes.

Toc Tien began participating in artistic activities at the Ho Chi Minh City Children's House at four years old, starting her professional performing career at 13. When her career was flourishing, she went to the US to study. In 2014, she returned to Vietnam, releasing many hit songs like "Ngay mai" (Tomorrow), composed by Luu Thien Huong, and "Co ai thuong em nhu anh" (Does Anyone Love Me Like You Do), by Bui Cong Nam. She received the Best Asian Artist award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2017. Toc Tien also ventured into acting with films such as "Gia Gan, My Nhan va Gang To" and "Thanh Soi".

After more than 20 years in the arts, the singer maintains her public appeal through a sensual image and youthful music style. She won the "Chi Dep Dap Gio 2024" show, securing three trophies after shining throughout the program.
