Vietnamese cinema gears up for Tet 2026

Tran Thanh's "Tho oi" to face off against "Bau vat troi cho," starring Tuan Tran and Phuong Anh Dao, on the first day of Tet Binh Ngo 2026.

Tran Thanh began filming the psychological drama "Tho oi" on 11/8. The director said the script reflects the lives of young people and their multifaceted relationships.

Tran Thanh has become a familiar face during the Tet film season, achieving box office success for four consecutive years with "Bo gia," "Nha ba Nu," "Mai," and "Bo tu bao thu," earning a total of over 1,700 billion VND according to Box Office Vietnam. On social media forums, many viewers expressed their hope that "Tho oi" will continue this success, offering a different story from his previous films.

A day after Tran Thanh announced his project, director Le Thanh Son—known for his success with "Bay rong" and "Em chua 18"—began filming "Bau vat troi cho." This family-themed film focuses on the message of togetherness. It reunites Tuan Tran and his on-screen partner Phuong Anh Dao after their collaboration in "Mai" (2024). The cast also includes Trung Dan, Kim Xuan, Ma Ran Do, Vo Tan Phat, Quach Ngoc Ngoan, and La Thanh.

The Tet 2026 film race also features "Mui pho," starring Xuan Hinh and Thu Trang. The film crew stated that filming was completed before the Lunar New Year 2025. Xuan Hinh plays a pho restaurant owner who wants to preserve traditional culinary and cultural values, while Thu Trang plays his daughter-in-law. Other cast members include Thanh Thanh Hien, Quoc Tuan, Thu Huong, and Tran Bao Nam.

Last Tet, three domestic films were released: "Bo tu bao thu" (directed by Tran Thanh), "Yeu nham ban than" (Nguyen Quang Dung, Diep The Vinh), and "Nu hon bac ty" (Thu Trang). Tran Thanh's film earned nearly 300 billion VND in 12 days, accounting for over 70% of the total box office revenue at that time.

According to a representative from the independent box office tracking site Box Office Vietnam, the Tet 2026 film season is expected to have a similar number of releases as previous years. The diversity of stories, settings, and casts promises to give audiences a wide range of choices. In film discussion groups, some fans are wondering whether these films will break box office records or continue the familiar "100 billion VND film" trend.
