Luc Thanh Cardiology Hospital recently admitted a 23-year-old female patient in a state of severe emaciation. Standing 1,7 m tall, she currently weighs only 44 kg. Previously, at a weight of 55 kg—considered ideal by many—she self-administered "weight loss injections" that were trending on social media, aiming for an extremely thin physique. Within two months, she lost 11 kg, leading to body deformation and the cessation of her menstrual cycle.
Doctor Ngo Nghien, Head of the hospital's Clinical Nutrition Department, stated that the patient's body composition analysis results alarmed the medical team. The young woman's total body fat was only about 8 kg, whereas the healthy average for adult women ranges from 11 to 16 kg.
Beyond the severe fat deficiency, significant muscle wasting occurred, causing basic bodily functions to nearly collapse. Extreme fasting combined with prolonged drug abuse not only kept her in a state of constant exhaustion but also led to severe hormonal imbalance, most evident in prolonged amenorrhea.
More concerning, Doctor Ngo Nghien pointed out that even as her body sent urgent distress signals, the young woman insisted she "was not thin enough". This is a typical sign of unhealthy weight loss, potentially bordering on Body Dysmorphic Disorder. In this condition, patients have a distorted perception of their own appearance and cannot objectively evaluate their weight and looks.

Doctor Ngo issued a strong warning that weight loss must be based on scientific principles. People must not blindly follow trends or self-administer any drugs or weight loss substances without a doctor's prescription.
"Extreme weight loss does not bring healthy beauty but only leads to irreversible damage such as osteoporosis, reproductive dysfunction, and metabolic disorders", Doctor Ngo emphasized.
Currently, the young woman is undergoing both nutritional and psychological treatment at the hospital. However, her recovery journey is anticipated to be very arduous.
The incident sparked heated discussions on social media platforms in China. Many netizens expressed concern, stating: "Thin does not equate to beauty; health is paramount", "Thinness not achieved through exercise is merely a pathological state", and "Please stop adding more body pressure on women".
