Kidneys are vital organs that filter blood, remove excess fluid, and eliminate toxins from the body. They also regulate blood pressure by balancing salt and water, and producing the hormone renin. Here are some signs that may indicate healthy kidney function.
Fresh morning breath
According to The Times of India, bad breath often links to poor oral hygiene or digestive problems. However, kidneys also play a crucial role in removing waste products like urea from the blood. When kidney function declines, these substances can accumulate, leading to breath with a distinct ammonia or fishy odor.
Conversely, waking up with normal breath, no strange taste, and no prolonged dry mouth can signal efficient kidney function. While easily overlooked, unusual changes in breath sometimes reflect early kidney problems.
Consistent energy throughout the day
Fatigue often links to lack of sleep, stress, or other health issues. Healthy kidneys support body energy by producing erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone that stimulates bone marrow to create red blood cells. Red blood cells transport oxygen to organs and tissues. When kidney function declines, red blood cell production can be affected, leading to anemia and fatigue, according to WebMD.
Radiant, smooth skin
Dry skin often relates to dehydration or weather effects. Healthy kidneys help regulate body water and maintain mineral balance, such as sodium and potassium. This keeps skin adequately moisturized, soft, and less prone to flaking.
One cannot assess kidney function based solely on skin condition. However, adequately hydrated skin, less dryness, and minimal flaking can partly reflect effective water and mineral balance in the body.
No facial swelling upon waking
Morning facial or eyelid swelling can relate to various causes, including lack of sleep, excessive salt intake, or water retention. In some cases, prolonged facial puffiness can also signal declining kidney function, making it difficult for the body to eliminate excess fluid.
Conversely, a fresh face with minimal swelling after waking can indicate effective fluid regulation and elimination throughout the night. However, this is only a reference sign and cannot accurately assess kidney function.
To maintain kidney health, adopt a scientific lifestyle with habits like drinking enough water, eating a low-salt diet, controlling blood pressure and blood sugar, and exercising regularly. Drink about 1,5-2 liters of water daily to help kidneys remove sodium, urea, and toxins.
