5 groups of people who should limit sugarcane juice

People with diabetes, digestive issues, tooth decay, and those on a weight loss regimen should restrict their intake of sugarcane juice.

Sugarcane juice offers numerous nutrients like calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and vitamins A, C, B1, B6, helping to replenish energy, electrolytes, and fluids in the body. Its vitamins and antioxidants also boost the immune system, protecting against infections and illnesses. However, this beverage contains a high amount of sugar, making it unsuitable for everyone.

Individuals with diabetes: A 200 ml glass of sugarcane juice can contain a significant amount of sugar, approximately 40-50 g, depending on preparation. This beverage can rapidly elevate blood sugar levels, making it unsuitable for those managing diabetes. People with diabetes experience dysregulation of blood sugar due to insulin deficiency or resistance. Frequent or excessive consumption of sugarcane juice can make blood sugar control challenging.

Those aiming for weight loss: Despite its nutritional content, sugarcane juice is not an ideal choice if you are trying to lose weight due to its high calorie and natural sugar levels. A 250 ml serving can contain 150 to 180 calories, and regular consumption can lead to weight gain rather than fat loss. Obesity is linked to health issues such as heart disease, fatty liver, and high cholesterol. Individuals on a weight loss regimen should opt for water, unsweetened herbal tea, or coconut water instead.

Individuals with a weakened immune system: Sugarcane juice is often extracted using machines, which can pose hygiene risks and increase the chance of bacterial contamination. While a healthy immune system can combat mild infections, those with compromised immunity, such as the elderly, children, or individuals with underlying medical conditions, are more susceptible to stomach infections, diarrhea, or food poisoning from unsanitary beverages. It is advisable to prepare drinks at home rather than purchasing them from street vendors.

People with digestive issues: Sugarcane juice may not be suitable for individuals with poor digestion, bloating, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Being rich in simple sugars, the beverage can ferment easily in the stomach, sometimes causing bloating and discomfort. Those with gastritis or frequent heartburn may also experience irritation from drinking sugarcane juice. Milk, herbal tea, coconut water, and aloe vera juice can help soothe and support digestion, reducing stomach acid.

Individuals prone to tooth decay: Beverages high in sugar can easily cling to teeth. If proper rinsing is not performed, this can lead to bacterial growth, cavities, and gum problems. To minimize this risk, it is recommended to rinse your mouth with water immediately after drinking, and maintain good oral hygiene habits, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups.
