Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by chronically elevated blood sugar levels. Morning hyperglycemia occurs between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m., typically due to the body's natural circadian rhythm, which increases glucose production and certain hormones like cortisol, leading to insulin resistance and high blood sugar.
Here are some warning signs of diabetes that often appear early in the day.
Dry mouth
According to the Times of India, dry mouth in the morning is a common symptom for people with diabetes. This is due to high blood sugar levels, which cause the body to excrete excess glucose through urine. This process leads to greater-than-normal water loss, resulting in thirst and dry mouth upon waking.
Diabetes can also impair salivary gland function. If dry mouth persists with fatigue, individuals should get checked to mitigate complications.
Nausea
When blood sugar levels are high, the body becomes dehydrated and experiences electrolyte imbalance, causing nausea or stomach discomfort upon waking. Diabetes can damage nerves controlling the stomach, slowing food digestion and easily causing bloating and indigestion.
Blurred vision
When blood sugar levels are high, fluid shifts within the body, causing the eye's lens to swell and altering its ability to focus light. This can lead to temporary blurred vision, especially in the morning. If high blood sugar persists, small blood vessels in the retina can be damaged, increasing the risk of diabetic retinopathy.
Numb feet
Numb feet in the morning can be a warning sign of diabetes because prolonged high blood sugar damages peripheral nerves, especially in the feet. This symptom is often more noticeable after waking because the feet have been inactive for many continuous hours throughout the night. Individuals should seek a health check if this condition occurs frequently along with thirst, blurred vision, and frequent urination.

Skin rash and itching
Prolonged high blood sugar causes dehydration, leading to dry, easily irritated, and itchy skin. Additionally, diabetes can damage small blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the skin and affecting its nourishment and recovery capabilities. High blood sugar also creates an environment for yeast and bacteria to thrive, increasing the risk of skin infections that cause itching, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Excessive thirst
People with diabetes often wake up feeling intensely thirsty because the body is trying to manage high blood sugar levels. The kidneys must work harder to filter and reabsorb excess glucose, a process that requires a lot of fluid.
