Physician Do Minh Tuan of the Vietnam Southern Traditional Medicine Association states that individuals who frequently feel cold, have chilled hands and feet, or experience bloating after consuming cold foods likely possess a "cold constitution" (the han). Balancing this condition involves adjusting diet, sleep patterns, and incorporating suitable exercise routines.
The five principles to improve this condition are:
Prioritize Warm Foods and Drinks
Those with a cold constitution often struggle to tolerate very cold foods and beverages over long periods. Many individuals habitually drink iced water throughout the year, consume fruit immediately after removing it from the refrigerator, or favor cold dishes to cool down.
While occasional consumption might not show immediate effects, consistent intake significantly impacts the digestive system. This can lead to bloating, poor digestion, or persistent fatigue. It is advisable to maintain regular meal schedules, favor cooked dishes, drink sufficient warm water, and strictly limit the consumption of cold foods and beverages.
Ensure Adequate Sleep
Many individuals experience daytime fatigue yet frequently stay up late. Those with a cold constitution naturally tend to have lower vitality and energy levels. Consistent late nights further hinder the body's ability to repair itself and replenish energy.
While there's no need to drastically alter your sleep schedule immediately, aim to go to bed 15 to 30 minutes earlier each day than your usual routine, ideally before 11 PM.
Stay Warm, Even in Hot Weather
A common misconception is that warmth is only essential during winter. However, many individuals with a cold constitution report joint aches, abdominal coldness, or general discomfort even in summer, particularly after prolonged exposure to air-conditioned environments.
Sensitive areas like the neck, shoulders, abdomen, and feet need particular care to remain comfortable, preventing prolonged penetration of cold air.
Gentle but Regular Exercise
Because of their predisposition to fatigue, many individuals with a cold constitution are hesitant to exercise. However, a lack of physical activity can inadvertently lead to increased sluggishness.
Gentle activities like walking, duong sinh (traditional Vietnamese health exercises), or personalized workouts can stimulate the circulation of qi and blood, promoting greater flexibility and comfort. The emphasis should be on daily consistency rather than high intensity.
Avoid Generic Approaches
Every individual has a distinct constitution and physical makeup. While some can consume iced water and cold foods without issue, others experience immediate adverse reactions.
"Understanding your own body is not a cause for worry, but an opportunity to discover the most appropriate health care and protection methods for yourself, rather than mechanically adopting strategies used by others," stated the physician.
