5 weekend habits that can raise blood sugar

Staying up late on weekends, partying after stressful workdays, and consuming greasy foods can all contribute to elevated blood sugar levels.

Weekends, often seen as a time for relaxation, can inadvertently lead to habits that negatively impact health, particularly blood sugar levels. Staying up late, dining out, drinking excessively, indulging in sugary and fatty foods, and a lack of physical activity are five common weekend behaviors that can contribute to elevated blood sugar, increasing the risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Late nights

Insufficient sleep can elevate cortisol levels and disrupt hormones that regulate hunger and fullness, promoting insulin resistance, according to Health. When cells resist insulin, sugar tends to remain in the bloodstream rather than being converted into energy. Over time, this chronic elevation in blood sugar can lead to prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, frequent late nights often trigger increased hunger, leading to higher consumption of calorie-dense foods. This contributes to weight gain, a known risk factor for diabetes.

Eating out

Many individuals tend to dine out or opt for convenient fast food on weekends. However, fast food often contains refined carbohydrates (carbs), unhealthy fats, and excess calories, which can cause sudden spikes in blood sugar. On weekends, when you have more leisure time, consider cooking at home more often. Prepare meals with blood sugar-friendly ingredients such as lean protein, healthy fats, and fiber-rich carbs.

Excessive alcohol consumption

According to Eating Well, many people commonly socialize and gather for meals and drinks after a work week. Consuming excessive alcohol and sugary beverages at parties poses numerous health risks. The risk of high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes is linked to alcohol intake. Alcohol can harm the liver and increase inflammation, negatively impacting the body's ability to regulate blood sugar. Adults can consume alcoholic beverages on weekends but must control their intake. Women should have no more than one drink per day, and men no more than two drinks.

High sugar and fat intake

Consistently consuming processed foods and added sugars on weekends can lead to elevated blood sugar. Meals high in refined carbs, sodium, added sugar, and saturated fats negatively impact blood sugar and heart health. On weekends, individuals should opt for diverse meals that include fiber, lean protein (fish, tofu, beans, chicken, lean beef), and healthy fats to achieve nutritional balance and stabilize blood sugar.

Sedentary lifestyle

A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of many diseases, including type 2 diabetes. Adults should engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily, including weekends, to boost health and manage blood sugar. Short bursts of activity, such as a 10-minute walk after dinner, also help control blood sugar levels. Therefore, avoid spending excessive weekend time sleeping, lying down, or watching movies.
