Heart failure is a condition where the heart muscle weakens, losing its ability to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. The condition can be managed through diet, lifestyle modifications, and prescribed medication. Below are some early signs of the disease that are often overlooked.
Fatigue and weakness are early indicators of heart failure. Individuals may experience unusual tiredness and weakness, even during simple activities like climbing stairs, walking short distances, or shopping. This occurs because the heart does not pump enough oxygen-rich blood to the organs, leaving the body constantly exhausted. Many people often dismiss this condition as merely a result of age or poor health.
Shortness of breath initially appears during household chores or physical activity. Over time, this condition can occur even at rest or when lying down. Some individuals may wake up at night due to difficulty breathing, needing to sit up or get out of bed to breathe easier. This is because fluid can accumulate in the lungs when the heart pumps blood inefficiently, obstructing gas exchange.
Wheezing. A persistent cough, possibly accompanied by white or pink phlegm, can signal fluid accumulation in the lungs due to heart failure. This symptom is often mistaken for a cold, allergies, or bronchitis, leading many to be complacent. If a cough is accompanied by shortness of breath or prolonged wheezing, an early medical check-up is necessary.
Difficulty concentrating. Heart failure can alter blood flow and cause chemical imbalances in the body, impacting brain function. This can lead to difficulty concentrating, confusion, or memory impairment. Typically, family members or caregivers notice these changes before the patient does.
Nausea. Heart failure can reduce blood flow to the digestive system, causing bloating, nausea, or loss of appetite. These symptoms are often overlooked or mistaken for stomach issues, when in fact they are related to the heart's diminished pumping function.
Difficulty moving. A diminished ability to move or perform normal activities indicates heart failure. Patients may find themselves quickly fatigued or short of breath after doing tasks they previously found easy. This physical decline is often attributed to old age or lack of physical activity.
