6 often overlooked signs of low blood pressure

Blurred vision, pain in the shoulders, neck, and cold extremities are warning signs of low blood pressure, but they are often overlooked because they are not commonly known.

Blurred vision. Things may appear blurry, distorted, or hazy if blood pressure drops, due to reduced blood flow to the eyes and brain. Sudden vision loss can also occur due to low blood pressure, but this is less common. If you experience vision changes, consult an ophthalmologist for examination and diagnosis.

Confusion. Confusion, difficulty concentrating, or memory problems can occur when blood pressure is low because the brain isn't receiving enough oxygen and nutrients.

Pain in the head, shoulders, and neck. Cramps or aches in the shoulders, neck, or back of the head can be caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing up after sitting or lying down. This is due to restricted blood flow to the muscles in the neck and shoulders.

Nausea. The major arteries (blood vessels carrying oxygen-rich blood) that supply the intestines can narrow to increase blood pressure, which can cause nausea. Reduced blood flow to the brain can also contribute to this.

Cold extremities. Cold hands, feet, arms, and legs are potential symptoms of low blood pressure. When blood pressure drops, arteries narrow to increase blood flow to vital organs like the brain, heart, liver, and kidneys. As a result, less blood flows to the extremities, making them cold, and the skin sometimes turns blue.

Chest pain. Chest pain or discomfort, known as angina, is a less common symptom of low blood pressure, occurring when blood flow to the heart muscle is restricted. Angina usually appears under the breastbone and is described as a heavy, tight, or squeezing sensation, often relieved by rest. In addition to the chest, the pain can also be felt in the arms, throat, jaw, or teeth.

Low blood pressure occurs when blood pressure readings are below 90/60 mmHg. It can be temporary or chronic and may be reversible, depending on the cause. Common causes include dehydration, medication side effects, pregnancy, autonomic nervous system disorders, anaphylactic shock, and septic shock. Consult a doctor if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above. A doctor can examine you to determine the root cause, prevent complications, and protect your health.
