How to help children develop their brains and thinking skills

Parents should encourage children to ask questions, solve problems independently, and read daily to stimulate critical thinking, creativity, and learning.

Unlike rote memorization, thinking skills enable children to observe, analyze, ask questions, and discover various solutions to situations. Here are simple ways parents can nurture their children's thinking abilities from an early age.

Allow children to solve age-appropriate problems themselves

According to the Times of India, many parents tend to do things for their children to save time or out of fear of their children failing. However, allowing children to solve small difficulties themselves is an effective way to train their thinking.

For example, when a toy breaks, instead of fixing it immediately, parents can ask their child what they should do first. If a child doesn't know how to pack their school bag or choose clothes, let them try and learn from the experience. Through the process of finding solutions independently, children learn to analyze situations, weigh options, make decisions, and gradually develop problem-solving skills.

Engage children in thinking games

Learning through play is a natural way for children to develop their brains. Games like puzzles, chess, mazes, matching, spot the difference, or riddles all require children to observe, remember, reason, and plan.

Parents should not focus too much on winning or losing; instead, encourage children to explain why they chose a certain approach or analyze it with them if they were unsuccessful. Discussing after each game helps children understand their own thought processes, thereby gradually developing logical thinking and the ability to view problems from multiple perspectives.

Read books and talk with children every day

Reading books helps children expand their vocabulary and stimulates imagination and reasoning skills. After finishing a story, parents can ask children questions such as: "If you were the main character, what would you do?", "What do you think will happen next?", or "Which character do you like most and why?".

These open-ended questions require children to recall content, analyze situations, and express their views. Besides books, parents can also talk with their children about everyday events to help them practice observing, articulating their thoughts, and expressing their opinions, according to Today's Parent.

Encourage children to explore and experience real life

Real-world experiences such as cooking with parents, planting trees, going to the supermarket, visiting museums, conducting simple science experiments, or observing nature offer children many learning opportunities. Through these activities, children develop the habit of asking questions and understanding the causes of phenomena.

For instance, when cooking with their child, parents can ask: "What will happen if we add too much water?". These thought-provoking questions encourage children to apply knowledge to real-life situations, while also training their observation, analysis, reasoning, and critical thinking skills.
