Longevity millionaire removes artificial turf over 'forever chemicals' fear

Tech millionaire Bryan Johnson removed artificial turf from his backyard after discovering it contained toxic chemicals, a move that contradicts his longevity goals.

Bryan Johnson revealed his decision to remove artificial turf from his backyard, citing concerns over harmful chemicals. He shared on X that the turf's rubber granules, sourced from recycled tires, leak hazardous substances. These include "forever chemicals" known as PFAS, along with heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Johnson expressed worry that these compounds could disrupt endocrine function, heighten cancer risk, and promote inflammation in the body. He voiced disappointment at overlooking such a significant health risk within his own home, despite his extensive efforts to mitigate health hazards globally.

The scientific community presents mixed findings regarding the safety of artificial turf. The US National Toxicology Program (NTP) confirms that standard artificial turf often utilizes rubber granules containing PAHs, metals, phthalates, and bisphenol A (BPA) for cushioning. However, research findings remain divided. NTP experiments on mice indicated that animals did not show signs of toxicity when ingesting rubber granules, and experts noted very low levels of chemical leakage. The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) also stated that the primary components of artificial turf do not pose significant risks. Conversely, tests on human cells have shown that rubber can leak cell-killing chemicals under specific, extremely high-temperature conditions.

Bryan Johnson is a prominent US tech millionaire, entrepreneur, and investor, widely known for his dedication to health and longevity. He actively invests in biological research projects aimed at slowing the aging process and enhancing quality of life. Johnson has drawn controversy for his extreme methods, which include consuming high-dose nutritional smoothies, undergoing red light therapy, and even receiving blood transfusions from his son in an effort to rejuvenate.

Johnson further demonstrates his commitment to anti-aging through "Project Blueprint," an intensive longevity program. He allocates two million USD annually to this program, which encompasses a strict diet, regular exercise, disciplined sleep routines, and periodic blood and organ tests. His daily regimen involves taking 111 different pills, consuming 2,250 calories within a six-hour window, and receiving frequent blood transfusions.
