The 28-year-old man narrowly avoided severe tissue damage after misusing a rubber constriction ring. Doctor Tra Anh Duy, a specialist at the Men's Health Center, reported on 4/10 that the patient fortunately showed no signs of severe tissue ischemia or penile necrosis. The prolonged constriction caused swelling, pain, inflammation, and congestion in the scrotal region.
The man admitted to wearing the rubber ring to increase pleasure and prolong intercourse. He received medical treatment and was advised to stop using the device during his recovery.
While constriction rings have legitimate medical applications, such as aiding in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, their proper use is critical. Medically designed rings are placed around the base of the penis after blood is drawn into the corpus cavernosum, helping to restrict blood outflow and maintain an erection. According to the European Association of Urology, these rings must be removed within 30 minutes to prevent tissue damage.
Many constriction rings sold commercially as sex toys are made from various materials like rubber, silicone, or metal. Some designs encompass both the penis and scrotum. Rings that are too small, rigid, or worn in multiple layers can exert excessive pressure. Medical literature has documented severe injuries, including penile necrosis, resulting from improper use of rubber bands. Non-elastic metal rings pose an even greater risk, as they tighten further when tissues swell, making them difficult to remove.

Doctor Duy explained that injuries progress from edema, pain, and reduced sensation to ischemia, necrosis, and irreversible tissue damage. Individuals should remove the ring immediately if they experience pain, numbness, reduced sensation, rapid swelling, discoloration (purple or other), unusual coldness, bleeding, or difficulty urinating. A ring stuck due to swelling should not be removed by oneself but requires proper medical intervention at a healthcare facility.
Doctors recommend choosing sexual support rings that can be removed quickly and do not constrict too tightly. It is advisable not to sleep while wearing the ring or to attempt to extend usage time to maintain an erection or increase pleasure.
