Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Dung, head of the dermatology and cosmetic dermatology unit at Tam Anh General Clinic, District 7, reported that Mr. Hung's skin lesion sample revealed a significant presence of Sarcoptes scabiei, the parasitic mite that causes scabies. This highly contagious mite spreads through close contact or shared personal items. Common symptoms include intense nighttime itching, small blisters, red bumps, or gray, thread-like burrows, typically concentrated in skin folds. Mr. Hung recounted enduring severe itching, particularly at night, for three years. He was initially diagnosed with atopic dermatitis and treated with antihistamines, which provided no relief.
Scabies symptoms can be misleading. Widespread redness and lesions beyond the typical skin folds often lead to misdiagnosis as allergies or other underlying conditions. "Scabies is a common skin condition, but it's easily overlooked, especially in the elderly," Dr. Dung explained, noting that Mr. Hung's pre-existing conditions, including hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and Cushing's syndrome, weakened his immune system, potentially masking the scabies.

Dr. Dung prescribed oral and topical medications for Mr. Hung and coordinated with other specialists to manage his underlying health issues. After a week, his itching subsided by 90%, and the skin lesions began to heal. Mr. Hung's wife was also diagnosed with scabies and received the same treatment.
Scabies spreads easily through close contact with infected individuals, shared belongings, or inadequate hygiene. Recurrence is common, and treatment can be lengthy and challenging. In older adults or those with chronic illnesses, prolonged scabies can lead to eczema, significantly impacting their quality of life, including sleep disturbances, psychological distress, and difficulty managing pre-existing conditions.
Dr. Dung advises anyone experiencing persistent, recurring itching to seek evaluation and treatment from a dermatologist to prevent the condition from worsening.
