Morning signs warning of stroke

Facial drooping, limb weakness, speech difficulties, or severe headache after waking up can be warning signs of a stroke, requiring emergency medical attention as soon as possible.

According to Healthline, some individuals experience a stroke while sleeping and only discover symptoms upon waking in the morning. This condition is known as a "wake-up stroke". Because the exact onset time is often unclear, many patients miss the "golden hour" for treatment. Recognizing these morning signs is crucial.

Upon waking, individuals may notice one side of their face drooping, difficulty smiling, or an inability to close one eye completely. This is a typical sign of stroke, resulting from damage to the brain region controlling facial muscles. The American Stroke Association (ASA) recommends the FAST acronym, where 'F' (face drooping) is an early indicator of facial asymmetry.

According to Mayo Clinic, weakness, numbness, or loss of movement on one side of the body are common stroke symptoms. Individuals might find it difficult to grasp objects, walk unsteadily, or be unable to lift one arm normally after waking up. These symptoms typically appear suddenly and affect only one side of the body.

Stroke patients may experience difficulty speaking, unclear pronunciation, or trouble understanding others' speech. Some individuals wake up realizing they have unusual slurred speech, despite being healthy before. The American Stroke Association warns that this symptom requires immediate emergency medical attention, as a stroke can progress rapidly and cause lasting brain damage.

Verywell Health reports that some wake-up strokes are identified after individuals experience severe dizziness, unsteady walking, or loss of coordination upon waking. This symptom is often mistaken for fatigue or an inner ear disorder.

Stroke can affect the brain region controlling vision, leading to blurred vision, double vision, or sudden vision loss in one or both eyes. If this condition appears unusually in the morning, individuals should seek early medical examination to assess the cause.

A sudden, severe headache, especially accompanied by vomiting, dizziness, or altered consciousness, may indicate a hemorrhagic stroke. Unlike common headaches, this pain is significantly more intense and appears rapidly without clear cause.
