Uterine fibroids, measuring 3x4 cm, were first detected in Minh in 2023. At the time, they caused no symptoms, and doctors advised monitoring. In recent months, she experienced abdominal pain during mid-menstrual cycle, radiating to her left lower back. Doctor Phan The Thi, from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Center at Tam Anh General Hospital Ho Chi Minh City, noted the patient's uterus contained a fibroid measuring 85x72x68 mm. The fibroid was deeply embedded within the broad ligament, close to blood vessels and adjacent to the ureter.
Uterine fibroids are benign and affect 60-70% of women of reproductive age. "However, a fibroid located in the broad ligament, near the ureter, like Minh's, presents a hazardous and exceptionally difficult surgical challenge", Doctor Thi stated. Without intervention, the fibroid could compress the ureter, leading to complications such as hydronephrosis, urinary tract infections, pyelonephritis, and long-term kidney damage.
Minh, who had undergone two previous cesarean sections, felt anxious about this surgery. Doctor Nguyen Ba My Nhi, Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Center, determined that the Da Vinci Xi robot would offer an optimal surgical approach for the patient.

The robot's arms, with their 540-degree rotation, allowed surgeons to access the challenging location, a feat conventional laparoscopic surgery cannot achieve. Its 3D imaging, magnified 10-15 times, enabled precise dissection in the confined area, reducing the risk of damaging adjacent organs and ensuring effective hemostasis. Minh's uterus was preserved, she had a small incision, and was discharged after 48 hours.
According to Doctor The Thi, robotic surgery is emerging as a global trend in treating gynecological conditions. Currently, all cases indicated for laparoscopic surgery can be performed robotically to enhance safety.
Experts advise women not to overlook symptoms such as prolonged menorrhagia or abdominal pain. Uterine fibroids often develop silently, with patients only discovering them during routine health check-ups. Excessively large fibroids can cause symptoms including menorrhagia, constipation, urinary dysfunction, or abdominal distension.
